Rose Marie Ryder's favorite campaign slogan was one she borrowed from the great Texas liberal, Ralph Yarborough: "Let's put the jam on the lower shelf so the little people can reach it." She made a name for herself by becoming the first female State Comptroller of Texas — and by making sure that the rich paid their fair share of taxes. Now "Red" Ryder is running to become the first woman U.S. Senator from the Lone Star State. She's made a few enemies along the way, from country radio d.j.'s to the highest echelons of monied society.

Joe Holley's novel takes us inside the almost always politically incorrect world of 1980s campaigning in Texas. Red Ryder's team is a lone-star potluck: a has-been evangelist's son who once ran a string of mobile massage parlors, veterans of the civil rights struggles, Austin lesbian activists, old-school political operatives with sterling motives and shady morals ... and then there is Wily T. Foxx. Until he joined the campaign — almost entirely by accident — Wily's passion in life had been cock fighting. Now he is literally the candidate's "purse bearer," a combination body-guard/campaign worker, privy to information that makes him a target for the intrigues of the other side and a magnet for at least one very sexy lady.

Texas politics are generally roisterous, often absurd, and occasionally deadly. Ballot boxes can grow fat in counties with more cattle than people, the dead can rise and walk to the polls, and the votes of common folk can be disqualified on a whim. Lawyers and lawmen, politicians and preachers, cow punchers and cattle barons all can come down on, well, both sides of the Law. Red Ryder's right-wing opponent, rancher and banker Jimmy Dale Sisco, is his own worst enemy when it comes to a thoughtful debate, but his minions will stop at nothing short of murder to ensure victory.
